Holding Out for A Hero

Recently, a group of Kindergarten students sat on the carpet during story time at the local elementary school. The librarian read them a book, recapped the moral of the story and when she was done she asked the children if they knew of any real-life heroes.  Students chimed in about teachers and others worthy of note, then I heard our 5-year-old son pipe up, “My Daddy’s a hero. He’s a soldier in the Army.”

Kindergarten art for a Hero!

When the mail came today, we opened a package from Dad’s former unit. Enclosed was The Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service that had been awarded during a recent ceremony while Dad’s been busy helping with the transition team in Afghanistan. “That’s awesome!” said our son. Awesome indeed, but so much more awesome is this “My Hero” medal picture he made for his Dad a while back in school. (It doesn’t hurt that one of our kids favorite books is Hero Dad by Melinda Hardin where the young boy compares his American Soldier Dad to a superhero!) Many hugs and high-fives to Dad for both awards! He is our hero and we’re holding out and holding up until he comes home safe and sound.

 Now, Let the Flag Fly

Deep within the metropolis of America, keeping cool at the crossroads of the world, he’s the go-to guy in Gotham . . . an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, political leader and hero for the people. The flag visit this week is just another reminder that “We like Mike” – Our Dad’s Flag recently spent some time with The Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, 108th Mayor of New York City. We are humbled and honored. Mr. Mayor – we thank you for your time and service to New York!  Also, we must thank Our Dad’s Flag ambassador Commissioner Terrance Holiday of the Mayor’s office of Veteran’s Affairs for arranging this visit.  Keep up the great work for NYC’s vets and thank you for your service!

Need More Mayor?

Our lives got in the way this week so there’s no real research or write up. But if you seriously have no idea about the 11th richest man in the US who is political history in the making….feed your informational needs about Michael R. Bloomberg by visiting http://www.mikebloomberg.com/ or nyc.gov. We really, really do like Mike! (Photo of Mayor Bloomberg: nyc.gov)

On the Road Again

As always, we’ve got plenty more exciting visits coming up so stay tuned as Our Dad’s Flag continues to travel the US promoting patriotism. Now that we’re thinking about it, we’re only a few months in and it’s been pretty awesome so far. So, where to next? Hmmm…

Thanks for reading, following and commenting.  Remember, if you pass a house or apartment that hangs the blue star flag in their window, keep that family in your thoughts and prayers. It’s not just for “Our Dad” – this is a time-honored tradition, a respected symbol and priviledge for the families of so many men and women in the armed forces serving far away from home. For those families who have lost their loved one in service – that blue star turns gold – let’s especially remember them.

If you like our project, share it with a friend, even better? Hold out for a hero and share it with a veteran! Feel free to tweet all about it and like us on Facebook.

I loved your description of the “Hero Lesson”. The children’s reflections on real-life heroes were indeed wonderful and the one from your five year old son was the best of all!
